THE ORIGIN OF YOWK

Hi :) If you're reading this you've probably stumbled across one of my songs and for that I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you! I'd love to tell you a bit about myself so we can get to know each other better if you don't mind. My name is Rowan and I'm from a small town called Milton, Wisconsin! I grew up in a large family, the 3rd of 7 children. My dad used to sing us to sleep while playing the guitar and I feel like that was instrumental in me developing a love for music at a very early age. For as long as I can remember, I've had the desire to be a performer. According to my grandma, I used to stand up in the windowsill and channel Elvis Presley (I bet it totally rocked too).

Throughout my whole childhood, I loved to sing and was often told by my relatives I should put my gifts to use. Even though I've always known I wanted to pursue a life in the arts, I never really took my family's encouragement in regards to pursuing music seriously. One day though, in my junior year of high school, one of my friends showed me a song he was working on. I told him I really dug it and he asked me if I wanted to feature on the track. So right there in gym class, I wrote a verse for his song and we went to his house after school to record it. I had so much fun making that song and once it was finished I got a rush I had never felt before. That was the day I fell in love with the process of making music... the day YOWK was born.

From that point on I became obsessed with songwriting as a means of raw expression and constantly trying to experiment with what I'm capable of sonically. My debut project suicide n' sunshine is that raw expression on full display. That whole album is me taking all the feelings and emotions from ages 17-18 that felt terrifyingly impossible to express and pouring them out viscerally across 17 tracks. I recorded the majority of it in solitude, in my bedroom using only my phone & BandLab. I didn't even purchase my first microphone until after the album was released. While I definitely feel I've advanced tremendously beyond the quality of that project, I still hold it so close to my heart because it is 100% me and the best work I could've made at the time. My 2nd project, CHAMELEON is the first showcase of my desire for reinvention and experimentation. In August of 2023, I met a producer named Gavin Gilson and we quickly hit it off. In our first two sessions we made the songs MORNING RAIN. & THE TRIP. and it was clear our creative chemistry was undeniable. I had never been able to work hands on with a producer and build songs from scratch before, and I loved every second of every single studio session that lead to CHAMELEON. The project just came together so naturally and Gavin and I had so much fun piecing it together and making every song as weird as possible. I think someday in the future, as people look back on my discography, that album will gain more appreciation for how strange and inventive it is.

In the last year, I've been back in the lab (my bedroom), continuing to work on improving my craft and sharpening my skillset as an artist. I've been writing a LOT of new songs, I've been writing screenplays, and perhaps there's even an album waiting to go when the time is right... In the meantime, I'm dropping new singles every single month and working tirelessly to build the YOWK community. If you're new here - thank you :) I appreciate every single person who's ever taken the time to listen to one of my songs.
